My Journey with Graphic Novels
I’ve read manga and watched anime for over 15 years. It has been a great hobby to explore on a budget. Recently, I’ve begun to explore graphic novels. Here are some recommendations from my journey so far reading graphic novels in the past year. Comics, graphic novels, games, manga, and other forms of entertainment are great ways to expand your perspective and increase your empathy. Personally, they’re great for me to avoid burnout and take a break after work. Here are some of my personal favorites so far. This will be a growing list that I’ll periodically update and share with friends interested in reading graphic novels.
Batman: The Killing Joke and Watchmen by Alan Moore
Check out all of Alan Moore’s work. He is one of the goats of comic books.
Sheriff of Babylon, Omega Men, Mister Miracle, and Vision by Tom King
Recommend checking out pretty much everything by Tom King. He’s great.
Here by Richard McGuire
This book showcases the stories that spaces tell over time. It’s thought-provoking, haunting, and exceptional at the same time. Left a strong impression on me. I’ve gifted it to a few family members.
Kingdom Come by Alex Ross
The art style from Ross in this book is phenomenal, even for a book that was published back in 1996. Don’t want to spoil any of this book, but definitely recommend checking this out. I love this book so much. Wish I had read it earlier.
Batman: Creature of the Night and Superman: Secret Identity by Kurt Busiek
Many folks probably won’t like this one, but I loved the unique interpretation it took on the Batman story. It’s a standalone story set in 1968 Boston. No spoilers here. Check it out! Same with Secret Identity Superman.
All Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly
One of the greatest Superman comics of all time. Read the comic book and watch the movie. 🍿
